What is ISP?

It is a technology that empowers internet users and consumers.  In simple words, the company providing internet facility is called ISP.

 In other words, whenever you need Internet connectivity at home and you are getting this service from a particular company, then that company is your Internet Service Provider (ISP).  Even if you have set up a router or WiFi for your Internet needs, without an ISP connection, these devices are useless for accessing the Internet.

 An Internet Service Provider (ISP) is not just one company, there are many ISPs around the world, which provide services to the users.  In India, there are a large number of ISP companies including Airtel, Jio, Vodafone Idea, BSNL and Reliance.

 ISPs provide services like Telephone and Broadband to the users.  They provide broadband connections through various means such as broadband wireless access, cable modem, DSL, satellite and Ethernet.  Each ISP operates its own servers, connecting users to these servers.

 The world’s first ISP company was established in the United States of America (USA) in 1984.  Similarly, in India, the Internet started on 15 August 1995, which was started by Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL).

History of ISP :

 Since the advent of the Internet, the number of Internet users is increasing rapidly and the use of the Internet has increased rapidly.  Users and large companies alike felt the need for high-speed internet.  Recognizing this issue, in 1984, “The World”, a company, became the pioneer of ISP services in the United States.  After this, many other companies also entered this service.

 Foreign companies started Internet Service Provider services in India on 15 August 1995, which led to the emergence of various ISPs across the country in the following years.  Today, the entire country is connected to each other through a network of internet service providers, allowing anyone in need of high-speed internet to easily access their services.
